If you are having trouble, try holding each string by itself first, and plucking it until you get a clear sound. Ideally. When you are strumming a chord, you would normally hold the chord for as long as you want it to ring out. As soon as you release, the chord will stop. Depending on the piece you are playing, this could be short or long. Keep trying, it will come.
